DEFINICION

  • ·        What is a preposition

     - Prepositions are one of the parts of English that is most difficult for Spanish speakers to learn because direct translation is often impossible. Prepositions can be translated differently according to the situation or context of their use. Therefore it is advisable to memorize the different variations and uses depending on whether we talk about prepositions of place, movement or time. We will see that many of the prepositions are repeated in the different sections.

WHEN TO USE IN ENGLISH

WHEN TO USE IN ENGLISH

Many times it is made known when and how to use the "TO" in English. Next, we explain how to use it correctly. Let's explain the two most common uses of "TO". These are: 1. To indicate the infinitive, or root, of a verb For example:

  • TO sleep- dormir
  • TO work- trabajar
  • TO do- hacer

2. How to preposition, that is, it tells us how two or more words are related. In this case, it is usually translated into Spanish as "a" For example:

  • I went TO eat:
  • She is not used to rude people:

TO BE IN FRONT OF A VERB

Something very important that we have to remember, is that when we use "TO" as a preposition and it goes before a verb, that verb usually ends in -ING. These are some of the most common expressions followed by a verb ending in -ING:

  • In addition TO-
  • Object TO-
  • Oppose TO-
  • Prefer doing something TO doing another thing-
  • Be used TO-
  • Look forward TO-
  • Get around TO-

Did not it become clear to you? Review the following examples of these expressions in simple sentences:

  • In addition TO cleaning the room, I made the bed.
  • Susana objects TO goING home.
  • Pedro opposed TO signING the contract. .
  • She prefers dancing TO running. .
  • I’m not used TO sleepING so many hours.
  • I’m looking forward TO seeING to you again. .
  • I’ll get around TO studyING after the party.

TO at the end of a sentence

Sometimes, TO appears at the end of a question.

For example:

  • Where are you travelling TO?
  • Who are you talking TO?

TO + INFINITIVO = PURPOSE OF AN ACTION

As we saw, to + infinitive is used to talk about the purpose of an earlier action.

He got up early to see the sunrise.
I called to invite him to the party.
She bought some ham to make sandwiches.
We went to the cinema to see the new Batman movie.
to + sitio = destination of a trip / displacement
And with some movement verbs, it is used to indicate the destination.

She went to Cuba on her last holiday.

They walked all the way to the top of the mountain.

He took the cake to his friend.

I drove to Salamanca last weekend.

to take into account

Not to be confused

In general, when two verbs are used together in English there are two ways to proceed. In the first of them the second verb is in infinitive and is used with the structure (to + verb). Or on the other hand, the second verb can have the ending "-ing" (verb + ing). How to know the correct way to use in each case? We have bad news, unfortunately there is no specific rule to determine its use. But do not worry, the good news is that we are here to help you dispel doubts with this article. 🙂 Let's see the different scenarios that can be produced: Verbs followed by infinitive (to + verb) The main verbs that are followed by the infinitive form are:

If you need to formulate the negative version for the second verb, you only have to add ¨not¨ in front of the ¨to¨. For example: We decided not to go out tonight. (We decided not to go out tonight). Verbs followed by (verb + ing) Now we are going to talk about those verbs that when followed by another verb, the latter requires the ending -ing.

2.) The second is the group of verbs that accept both forms but change their meaning. Let's see it!

An exception: preference verbs, when used with would or should, should only be followed by the infinitive: We would like to have more time. (We would like to have more time) They would love to stay. (They would love to stay). Finally, the verb dislike (not to like) can only be used followed by verb with ending ing: We all disliked listening to him. (None of us liked to listen to him). We could stop here because the article is long, but at this point, there is one more thing we would like to talk about. Do you know that there are verbs that can be followed by other verbs without using to + infinitive or -ing? The main verbs are: let, make, help. Example: Let me see that for you. You can not make her go to that party. Please, help me find the way to get there. How much we have seen today! How about practicing a little writing examples for readers in the comments section? Or if you need help, write us your doubts. 😉

PROBLEMS WITH THE TO

The problem with the preposition "to" in English

A very simple way to realize that someone does not have a good level of English is to use the preposition "to". The majority of Spanish speakers have many problems with this preposition since they automatically place it next to a verb. This happens by making a literal translation without thinking anything else. Let's see some of these incorrect examples:

  • * I call to my Friends every day.
  • * We must to study today.
  • * I always tell to my friend the answer

The preposition "to" should not appear in any of the three cases we have just seen, and yet it happens. Next, we are going to give you some advice on how we can improve our knowledge of this problematic preposition. The preposition "to" is used in the following cases:
- With movement verbs: go, eat, take, walk, drive. But beware! because not always ... Let's see an example:
  • I usually arrive home at nine o'clock (not used "to")
With the noun "home" never gets "to" in front.

- Always with verbs such as "listen", "explain", "say", "speak", "talk", "give" and "send"
- With the verb "say", "to" is set only when the object is a person:

 TO WITH MODAL VERBS

Do not put the preposition "to" with the modal verbs: must, will, might, may, can, could.
