PROBLEMS WITH THE TO

The problem with the preposition "to" in English

A very simple way to realize that someone does not have a good level of English is to use the preposition "to". The majority of Spanish speakers have many problems with this preposition since they automatically place it next to a verb. This happens by making a literal translation without thinking anything else. Let's see some of these incorrect examples:

  • * I call to my Friends every day.
  • * We must to study today.
  • * I always tell to my friend the answer

The preposition "to" should not appear in any of the three cases we have just seen, and yet it happens. Next, we are going to give you some advice on how we can improve our knowledge of this problematic preposition. The preposition "to" is used in the following cases:
- With movement verbs: go, eat, take, walk, drive. But beware! because not always ... Let's see an example:
  • I usually arrive home at nine o'clock (not used "to")
With the noun "home" never gets "to" in front.

- Always with verbs such as "listen", "explain", "say", "speak", "talk", "give" and "send"
- With the verb "say", "to" is set only when the object is a person:
